Eat well in Benidorm

June 29th, 2011

Just like any other good Mediterranean city, Benidorm has a surprising variety of gastronomy that is based on the typical products from the Mediterranean diet.

However there are major contrasts to be found. Its most typical and traditional cooking is now combined with dishes coming from tourism bringing us tastes from far away places like Russia, Thailand, Italy and China, etc

If you feel like good rice with lobster, soupy rice, rice stew, a mouth-watering seafood or mixed paella you are in the perfect place. There’s a huge selection of restaurants to choose from where you can try these magnificent dishes, many of them are located right by the sea, looking onto the beach which if it is at all possible, will make your time spent sampling these delicacies even more enjoyable.

RESTAURANTE BARRANCO PLAYA: Avenida Vicente Llorca Alós, 14-Cala Benidorm. The menu has around 20 starters, almost all of which are made with products from the sea, there’s more than ten types of delicious rice, the meat is prepared in five different ways, there’s as many or even more fish dishes and plenty of desserts.

RESTAURANTE ULIA: Avenida Vicente Llorca Alós, 15- cala Benidorm. Cooks at Ulia specialise in fresh fish and seafood. Red porgy, sea bass, sea bream, sole. The seafood rice and the rice stews with angler fish, lobsters, Dublin Bay prawns and squid are served in typical cooking pots.

LA CUINA DE PONENT: C/ Santander, 18 – La Cala de Benidorm. It serves “signature cuisine”. It’s updated traditional cooking with natural flavours, seasonal products, textures, there’s no tricks or cartons here! The rice is based on simple, natural recipes.

CASA TONI: Av, Cuenca Gemelos IV local 27. The homemade Russian salad, cheese and ham croquettes or the baby broad beans with baby squid are highly recommendable. If you choose meat cooked on hot stones as your main course you’ll be stuck for words and there’s baked sea bass if you prefer. Even though there’s a set menu, you can always ask Toni if he has any specials of the day made with ingredients he bought in the morning at the market.

TAITA: Primavera 8- Benidorm. It’s known for its all-time cooking with a touch of modernity. There’s a huge variety of dishes made with local quality ingredients. We recommend the sirloin steak or any of the fish. The desserts are the highlight of the meal, they’re scrumptious. There’s a wide selection of good wines too.

HOTEL LEVANTE CLUB: All the food on the menu of the day is served at the buffet. Clients can order special dishes or food for diets too. Ask for our menu, it’s full of the best of Mediterranean cooking, fish, meat and rice for you to sample and wash down with the best wines. The best quality value with an excellent service. If you looking for something a bit more casual come and have tapas which are small portions of food just like appetizers. The flavours to savour in Benidorm range from nibbles from the Basque country to the delights of the Mediterranean shores. The hustle and bustle and the delicacies of the bars will remind you of the old quarters of Donostia. Incidentally the area is known as tapas bar alley or the Basque alleyway-

You should start at Aurrera (Santo Domingo). Apart from its star tapa (cod with egg plant), try the grated cheese courgette, wild mushrooms and ham with fig sauce or the roast peppers, anchovies or eggy prawn fried bread.

Then go on to La Cava Aragonesa (Pza. de la Constitución, 2), it’s the most famous tapa bar in Benidorm. You can choose from the three date brochette, codfish balls, blue cheese and pork medlars, baby brochette of pork sausage and peppered date or scallops au gratin.

At El TAMBORIL (Santo Domingo, 10) the most popular appetizer here is the three cheese tapa: brie, blue and Burgos cheese with Iberian cured ham.

LA TABERNA DEL NORTE (Rosario, 9) is full of photos from the Basque Country, the tapas, especially the Spanish omelette, are delicious.

At the TABERNA TXAPELA (Martínez Oriola, 19), the typical tapas are the wild asparagus with brie or ham and egg plant.

CARPE DIEM The new tapa trend has created nibbles such as this goat’s cheese and prawn wrap.

To sum it all up gastronomically speaking it’s a highly recommendable city for anyone who wants to enjoy flavours from the sea and have the best products on their table.

Saint John’s midsummer celebrations to enjoy the shortest night of the year.

June 17th, 2011

Saint John’s Night is a very old celebration which is held in honour of the arrival of the summer sostilce in the northern hemisphere and the main ritual is to light a bonfire.

The ritual is intended to “give the sun strength“, as it gets weaker and weaker from this day onwards, during the shorter days leading up to winter solstice. Symbolically fire was also thought to “purify” those that gazed at it. This feast is celebrated in many parts of Europe, although it is well established in Spain and in particular in Alicante because it’s the feast day of the local patron saint.

In Benidorm this deeply-rooted festivity is celebrated with the spectacular Saint John’s Bonfire called Hogueras de San Juan. The different associations that celebrate this feast including la hoguera de la Cala, la hoguera del Mercado put their bonfire monuments and figures on display for a few days for locals and tourists to see. The city is decorated for the special occasion and numerous events are put on to be enjoyed.

The big party though is held at night on the 23rd of June SAINT JOHN’S NIGHT, where the city of Benidorm takes over the beaches from early on in the evening. Families, friends, tourists light their bonfires, put down their towels and get ready to have lots of fun on the shortest, most magical night of the year.
It’s custom to take everything needed to make the festivities on the sand a great success: wood for the bonfires, wishes made on pieces of paper to be burnt, good music and an appetite for scrumptious things to eat.

At 12:00 midnight the neighbourhood bonfires are burnt and the young people jump over the embers, go for a swim in the sea, jump over waves and make three wishes. The party is a guaranteed success, open-air celebrations and dances, games, swims in the sea, fireworks, nobody wants to stay indoors.  Come and find out what Saint John’s night is like in Benidorm.

There are great deals to be had when you make your reservation to share the magical Saint John’s night with us. Don’t forget that if you book before the 30th of June you’ll get a 5% discount. Don’t miss out on this offer.

Get our bodies ready for the summer

June 1st, 2011

The benefits of the Pilates method are obvious straight away and it has been recommended by specialists, physiotherapists and personal trainers and coaches for years.

The fact that its well-known benefits are sometimes distorted by advertising campaigns to sell the Pilates Method as just another product shouldn’t be forgotten. These campaigns have sold it as being the answer to getting rid of cellulite, to get a slim, sculpted figure. It’s true that the Pilates method does tend to shape your body and sculpt your figure but not miraculously or mysteriously, the changes occur naturally, and they depend on the physical characteristics of the individual in question. That is why you have to be aware of the main objective of this physical fitness system whose results depend on muscle oxygenation and the enhanced suppleness of the body.

Among other things on a physical level, the Pilates method helps to:

  • Firm up your body by improving your general physical condition
  • Get healthier joints by increasing your body’s mobility and flexibility
  • Gain physical strength and stamina which in turn prevents injury
  • Enhance the mind’s control over the body which consequently builds up self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Correct and change bad postures that can cause different types of ailments and it improves the body’s equilibrium in general

In addition to the physical results, the Pilates method is also beneficial mentally and spiritually when it is carried out regularly as it relaxes and strengthens the body and mind and focuses especially on the attitudes and values of the individual in question. Above all the Pilates method is a discipline and as such, it requires commitment and consistency from everyone who does it.

Go on! Why don’t you try out the Pilates method at our Gym in the Luxor spa & fitness center Benidorm in our group classes that are guided by expert instructors. We’re waiting for you!!

Benidorm, the city that doesn’t sleep

June 1st, 2011

Apart from being one of the main tourist destinations with its beaches and its attractions for grown ups and kids, Benidorm is also a great place to relax and go out with friends at night. There are hundreds of different types of bars to choose from.

Benidorm at night is captivating. The sea, the thousands of coloured lights beside enormous buildings that welcome you. If you are with friends, you’ll be able to have fun at some of the best parties around and if you’re with your partner you can have a nice romantic dinner next to the sea.

There is something different on every night so you can enjoy yourself to the full. You’ll find bars for all ages along the Levante beach: there are bars with rock pumping out; others with the most danceable music to get you going and others with more peaceful tunes for those who prefer to listen to music over a good conversation.

For football fans, many bar terraces have big TV screens so that clients can watch all the sporting events. For those who want to have a good  pint of beer there’s a wide variety of very cosy British pubs in the street, calle Gerona, where you can get a nice thirst quenching brew for a fantastic price.

That is why you should relax and have a proper rest in the day because the night life in Benidorm goes on to the early hours of the morning and is full of excitement. So if you need to get away from all that stress, don’t wait any longer, come and visit Benidorm; you’ll have fun day and night, so much that you’ll forget about going to bed.
